Hummingbird Nocturnal Habits

Hummingbirds' nocturnal habits are characterized by a state of deep sleep called torpor, which allows them to drastically reduce their metabolism so they do not die of cold or starvation during the night.

How Do They Sleep? (Torpor)

  • Extreme energy savings: Their heart rate drops from over 1,000 beats per minute to just between 50 and 180.
  • Low temperature: Their body temperature decreases from around 40°C (104°F) to near 18°C (64°F).
  • Total immobility: They become so rigid that they look dead or hang upside down, as their breathing becomes extremely slow.

Where Do They Sleep?

  • Protected branches: They look for leafy shrubs or branches hidden among leaves to protect themselves from the wind and predators.
  • Exceptions in females: Outside the breeding season, they sleep perched on branches; however, mothers with chicks spend the night inside their nests.

Waking Up at Dawn

  • Slow process: When the sun comes up, they do not fly away immediately; they need between 20 and 60 minutes to shiver, generate heat, and gradually reactivate their metabolism.
  • Urgent feeding: The very first thing they do upon waking up is look for nectar to recover the energy spent during the night
